# German Cockroaches: How to Identify Them, Why They Come Back and When to Call (2026)

Published: 2026-10-26
A German cockroach is the small cockroach you find in kitchens. It is about 12 to 16 mm long, tan to light brown, with two dark stripes running down the shield behind its head. It lives and breeds indoors, in cupboard…
## In summary

- **Size tells you most of it.** A German cockroach is 12 to 16 mm, tan, with two dark stripes behind the head. A cockroach 25 mm or longer is an outdoor species that has wandered in.
- **They breed indoors, out of sight.** The colony lives in warm appliances, cupboard hinges and under-sink cupboards, and one egg case holds 30 to 48 eggs.
- **Sprays kill the cockroaches they hit, not the egg cases.** That is why a new wave of babies turns up three to four weeks after spraying.
- **Babies, daytime sightings, pepper-like droppings in hinges or a comeback after spraying** all mean an established colony. That is the point to book a targeted treatment.
- **Rentals and food businesses should keep dated records from the first sighting.** Those records help settle who pays in a tenancy and answer an environmental health officer's questions in a food business.

## What does a German cockroach look like?

An adult German cockroach is 12 to 16 mm long, light brown to tan, with two dark parallel stripes on the pronotum, the shield behind its head. That is a little shorter than a 5 cent coin is wide. Its wings cover its back, but it rarely flies. The young (nymphs) are smaller, darker and wingless, which is why many people think they have two different pests.

| Life stage | What you see | Where you find it | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Egg case | A light brown capsule about 8 mm long, carried at the tail end of the female or tucked into a dark corner | Hinges, cupboard corners, inside appliances | Up to 48 more cockroaches are on the way, and surface sprays will not reach them |
| Nymph (baby) | 3 to 12 mm, dark brown to black, no wings, a pale stripe down the middle of the back | The same hiding spots as the adults, often in groups | They are breeding inside the house or premises |
| Adult | 12 to 16 mm, tan, two dark stripes behind the head, wings reaching the end of the body | Running for cover when the light goes on | A female carrying an egg case is the clearest sign of breeding |

Nymphs moult five or six times before they become adults, and each moult leaves a pale, empty skin behind. Males are slimmer, with a narrow, tapered abdomen. Females are broader, and you will often see one with an egg case sticking out of her tail end.

The [Australian Museum](https://australian.museum/learn/animals/insects/german-cockroach/) calls the German cockroach (*Blattella germanica*) the hardest pest cockroach to get rid of. It is found right across Australia, Rockhampton included.

## How do you tell a German cockroach from other cockroaches?

Size and markings separate them in seconds. German and brown-banded cockroaches are small and breed indoors. Australian, American and smoky brown cockroaches are big, live outside and wander in on warm nights. The difference matters because each group is treated in different places.

| Cockroach | Adult size | How to spot it | Where it lives |
|---|---|---|---|
| German | 12 to 16 mm | Tan, two dark stripes behind the head | Kitchens, bathrooms, inside appliances |
| Brown-banded | 10 to 14 mm | Two pale bands across the wings and body | Drier, higher spots indoors: bedrooms, furniture, behind pictures, electronics |
| Australian | 23 to 35 mm | Reddish brown, yellow edge on the shield, yellow streaks along the front of the wings | Gardens, leaf litter, sub-floors, roof voids |
| American | 35 to 40 mm or more | Reddish brown, pale band around the edge of the shield | Drains, sewers, sub-floors, roof voids |
| Smoky brown | About 30 to 35 mm | Plain, glossy dark brown to black | Trees, gutters, mulch, sheds |

The two small species breed indoors, so treatment has to reach the places inside where they shelter. The three big species breed outside and wander in, so they are handled by sealing gaps and treating drains, sub-floors and the outside of the house. Older high-set homes with open sub-floors, and doors without seals, let the big outdoor cockroaches in. A German cockroach problem is different. It starts inside, usually in the kitchen, and it stays inside.

## Where do German cockroaches hide?

German cockroaches hide within a few metres of food and water, in tight, warm gaps where they can press their back and belly against a surface. In a house that means the kitchen first, then bathrooms and the laundry. You rarely see them during the day, because they are packed into hinges, voids and motor housings.

**In a home, check:**

- the top hinges and corners of kitchen cupboard doors
- drawer runners and the underside of drawers
- under the sink, around the pipes and where plumbing goes through the wall
- behind and under the fridge, around the motor and drip tray
- the dishwasher kick panel and door seals
- around the oven, cooktop and rangehood
- inside the microwave, toaster, kettle base, coffee machine and air fryer
- pantry joins, kickboards and gaps behind the splashback
- bathroom vanities, the laundry tub and around the hot water system

**In a food business, check:**

- dishwashers and glass washers
- under-bench fridges and cool room door seals
- ovens, fryers, bain-maries and coffee machines
- the hollow legs and frames of stainless benches and shelving
- floor drains, grease traps and the bin area
- delivery cardboard, egg cartons and stock crates
- warm electronics such as point-of-sale screens and drink fridge motors

They stay close to where they shelter, so the cupboard where you keep seeing them is usually right next to the source. On a German cockroach job we start at the fridge, dishwasher, oven, microwave, cupboard hinges, splashbacks, kickboards and sink plumbing.

## What are the signs of a German cockroach infestation?

The clearest signs are droppings like ground pepper in cupboard hinges and drawer runners, small dark nymphs, empty egg cases, and cockroaches out in daylight. One adult at night can be a stray that came in with the shopping. Several signs together mean a colony is living in the room.

- **Droppings:** black specks like ground pepper or coffee grounds, collected in hinges, corners and along drawer runners.
- **Smear marks:** brown streaks along edges and openings where cockroaches squeeze in and out.
- **Egg cases and cast skins:** light brown capsules about 8 mm long, and pale empty skins left behind as nymphs grow.
- **Nymphs:** small, dark, wingless cockroaches in the same spots as the adults.
- **Daytime activity:** German cockroaches feed at night. Seeing them by day usually means the hiding spots are full.
- **Smell:** a musty, oily odour in closed cupboards once numbers are high.

### How to check your kitchen in three nights

You can measure the problem before anyone treats it. Sticky traps (glue boards from the supermarket or hardware store) show you where the colony is and roughly how big it is.

1. Put sticky traps flat against the wall in corners: under the sink, beside the fridge, beside the dishwasher, in the bottom corner of the pantry, near the stove and inside the bathroom vanity.
2. Leave them for three nights and do not spray.
3. Count the adults and nymphs on each trap and photograph them with the date.
4. The trap with the highest count sits next to the harbourage (the trade word for where they shelter). Lots of nymphs means breeding.
5. For a night check, walk into the dark kitchen quietly, wait a moment, then switch on a torch and watch where they run.

Keep the photos. They show us where to place treatment, and in a rental or a food business they become part of your record. For more on night sightings, see [cockroaches in the kitchen after dark](/resources/cockroaches-in-the-kitchen-after-dark/).

## Why do I suddenly have German cockroaches?

Most German cockroach problems start with a hitchhiker, not a dirty kitchen. They ride in on cardboard boxes, grocery cartons, secondhand fridges, microwaves and furniture, or move through shared walls and plumbing from a neighbouring unit. A single female carrying an egg case is enough to start a colony.

Common ways they arrive in Rockhampton homes and businesses:

- moving boxes, cartons and online deliveries
- secondhand appliances, especially fridges, microwaves, toasters and coffee machines
- secondhand furniture and electronics
- shared walls, ceiling spaces and pipe runs in units, flats and townhouses
- supplier deliveries and stock crates in food businesses

Once they are in, Rockhampton's climate does the rest. German cockroaches thrive at around 25 to 30°C, according to [NC State Extension](https://content.ces.ncsu.edu/biology-behavior-of-the-german-cockroach). That is a normal Rockhampton kitchen for most of the year, and the base of a fridge or dishwasher stays warm even in July. Eggs hatch in three to four weeks, the nymphs mature over the next six weeks or so, and a new female is soon carrying her own egg case. The Australian Museum puts the potential output of one female at up to 20,000 young a year.

## Why do German cockroaches keep coming back?

German cockroaches come back when treatment reaches the cockroaches you can see and misses the ones you cannot: the egg cases, the nymphs inside appliances and the colony behind the cupboard. Each egg case hatches three to four weeks after it forms, so a spray that seemed to work is often followed by a new wave of babies. These are the usual reasons the cycle keeps going.

1. **Egg cases survive.** The female carries her egg case until just before it hatches, then tucks it into a dark corner. A spray does not get through the case, and the hatchlings appear weeks later in a cupboard that has since been wiped clean.
2. **Surface sprays scatter them.** Many sprays repel cockroaches, so they move deeper into wall voids, other rooms or the unit next door, then come back when it is safe.
3. **Spray near bait spoils the bait.** Bait only works if cockroaches eat it. Spraying over or beside bait, or wiping it away while cleaning, stops them feeding on it.
4. **They live where nobody sprays.** Fridge motors, dishwasher bases, microwaves and coffee machines are warm and dark, and they rarely get treated.
5. **Bug bombs miss them.** A 2019 North Carolina State University study found total-release foggers did not reduce German cockroach numbers in infested homes, while baits did. Fog settles on open surfaces, and German cockroaches live inside cracks.
6. **Resistance builds with repeated use.** German cockroaches breed so fast that a population can become resistant to products used on it again and again. [Purdue University research](https://www.purdue.edu/newsroom/archive/releases/2019/Q2/rapid-cross-resistance-bringing-cockroaches-closer-to-invincibility.html) in 2019 found resistance sometimes rose four- to six-fold within a single generation, and some populations have even evolved to avoid the sugar used in some baits.
7. **New ones keep arriving.** In units, a treated kitchen can be re-infested from next door. In a food business, every delivery is a chance to bring them back in.
8. **The job stops too early.** A heavy infestation usually needs a follow-up visit, timed for when the protected egg cases have hatched.

A direct hit from a household spray kills the cockroach it lands on. It does nothing about the egg cases or the colony behind the cupboard, which is why the most satisfying option in the moment is often the one that keeps the problem going.

## Are German cockroaches dangerous?

German cockroaches are a health problem more than a bite problem. They move between bins, drains, floors and benches at night, and they can carry food-poisoning bacteria such as *Salmonella* and *E. coli* on their bodies. Their droppings, saliva and cast skins also carry allergens linked to asthma.

They rarely fly, and they are not known for biting people. The risk is what they leave on surfaces, in food and in the air. In a food business, that turns a pest problem into a food safety problem.

## How do you get rid of German cockroaches?

You get rid of German cockroaches by taking away their food, water and shelter, then placing bait and other targeted treatment in the cracks and appliances where they live, and following up when the egg cases hatch. Broad spraying and bug bombs make the job harder. Light activity caught early can sometimes be handled at home, but an established colony usually needs a professional treatment.

### What you can do this week

1. **Confirm it is a German cockroach.** Photograph one next to a 5 cent coin and look for the two stripes.
2. **Map the activity with sticky traps** for three nights, as set out above.
3. **Remove the food.** Store food in sealed containers, wipe grease from behind the cooktop and under appliances, empty the toaster crumb tray, pick up pet food bowls overnight and keep bins lidded.
4. **Remove the water.** Fix dripping taps, dry the sink at night, check the fridge drip tray and dishwasher seals, and do not leave wet cloths or sponges out.
5. **Remove the shelter.** Get cardboard out of the kitchen, clear cluttered cupboards, and vacuum up droppings, egg cases and cockroaches. Empty the vacuum into a sealed bag and put it in the outside bin.
6. **Clean the hinges and corners well.** Their droppings carry chemical signals that draw other cockroaches to the same spot.
7. **If you use bait,** put small amounts into cracks close to the activity rather than on open benches, and do not spray anywhere near it.
8. **Skip bug bombs and random spraying.** They scatter the colony and make any later treatment harder.
9. **Write down what you have already used.** It changes what a technician can put down and where.

### What a professional German cockroach treatment involves

A proper treatment starts with finding the colony, not spraying the room. Our cockroach jobs follow five stages: Inspect, Identify, Treat, Advise and Review.

| Stage | What happens |
|---|---|
| Inspect | We check kitchens, bathrooms, laundries, cupboards, appliance gaps, plumbing penetrations, drains, bins, doorways and exterior edges. For German cockroaches, the focus is fridges, dishwashers, ovens, microwaves, cupboard hinges, splashbacks, kickboards and sink plumbing. |
| Identify | We confirm the species and read the activity pattern. German cockroaches in a kitchen need a different focus from large cockroaches coming in from outside. |
| Treat | Treatment goes into the pathways and hiding spots they use: cracks, voids, appliance surrounds, cupboard gaps and plumbing penetrations. Product choice and placement depend on the cockroach, how many there are, the layout and where food is prepared. |
| Advise | We explain what is feeding the problem, such as food access, moisture, bins, drains, clutter, door gaps or shelter outside. |
| Review | German cockroach jobs can need more than one visit, because egg cases sheltered during the first treatment hatch later. We give you follow-up guidance on what to watch for and when to contact us again. |

You may see a few more cockroaches out in the open for several days after treatment. Leave the treated areas alone and keep up the cleaning. Our guide to [preparing your home for pest control](/resources/how-to-prepare-your-home-for-pest-control-rockhampton/) covers the steps before a visit. If you have pets or young children, read our guide to [pest control around pets and children](/resources/is-pest-control-safe-for-pets-and-children/) first.

## German cockroaches in rentals: what should tenants, landlords and property managers do?

In a Queensland rental, responsibility for German cockroaches usually comes down to when the problem started, what caused it and what the records show. German cockroaches arrive in boxes and appliances or spread through shared walls, so the cause is often unclear. Report early, keep dated evidence, and treat the problem before it spreads to the next unit or the next tenancy.

**Tenants**

- Report the first sightings to the property manager in writing, with dated photos and trap counts.
- Check whether cockroaches were noted on the Entry Condition Report (Form 1a).
- Keep up the food, water and shelter steps above. They help any treatment work, and they show what you have done.

**Landlords and property managers**

- Ask for photos and trap counts, then arrange an inspection to confirm the species and where the activity is coming from.
- In unit blocks, ask the body corporate whether neighbouring units are affected. Treating one unit on its own can leave the source next door.
- Use the changeover between tenancies. An empty property with clear cupboards and appliances is easier to treat thoroughly.
- Keep the service details with the property file.

Check the [Residential Tenancies Authority's pest guidance](https://www.rta.qld.gov.au/pests) and the tenancy agreement before deciding who pays, because the type of pest alone does not settle it. Our guide to [who pays for pest control in Queensland rentals](/resources/do-landlords-or-tenants-pay-for-pest-control-in-queensland-rentals/) covers the detail. For changeovers, see [end-of-lease pest control in Rockhampton](/end-of-lease-pest-control-rockhampton/), and for managed portfolios, see [property management pest control](/service/property-management-pest-control/).

## What should a Rockhampton food business do about German cockroaches?

Act on the first sighting. Food law requires every food business to keep pests out and to remove the places they live, and German cockroaches breed too fast to wait. Log it, protect or throw out exposed food, clean the area and call for a commercial treatment rather than spraying it yourself.

Queensland's *Food Act 2006* applies the national Food Standards Code. Its Standard 3.2.2 requires a food business to take all practicable measures to stop pests entering the premises, and to get rid of pests and the places they shelter. Food Standards Australia New Zealand explains what that means in practice in its [Safe Food Australia guide](https://www.foodstandards.gov.au/publications/safefoodaustralia). Evidence of pests is one of the things environmental health officers look for when they inspect a food business.

**When you see a German cockroach on the premises:**

1. Record it in your pest log: the date, time, exact spot, number seen, adults or babies, and what you did.
2. Throw out any food or packaging the cockroaches have been on, then clean and sanitise the surfaces.
3. Check the nearest hiding spots: the dishwasher, under-bench fridges, the coffee machine, bench legs, drains and stored cardboard.
4. Do not spray around the kitchen yourself. It scatters the colony into equipment and can spoil any bait already in place.
5. Call your pest controller and keep the report with your food safety records.

**Prevention that holds up at inspection:**

- Break down delivery cardboard and get it out of the kitchen as soon as stock is unpacked.
- Check deliveries and secondhand equipment before they come into the kitchen.
- Clean under and behind equipment on a schedule, as well as the surfaces you can see.
- Fix leaks and keep floor drains clean.
- Keep a pest log and a regular commercial pest service, with the records on file.

Cafés, takeaways and other food sites can start with [commercial pest control in Rockhampton](/commercial-pest-control-rockhampton/) or our [commercial pest control guide for small businesses](/resources/commercial-pest-control-guide-for-small-businesses-in-central-queensland/). Commercial sites get clear records of findings, treatment areas, pest activity noted, photographs where relevant and follow-up advice, and we plan visits around trading hours where practical.

## When should you call a pest controller for German cockroaches?

Call when you see babies, daytime cockroaches, droppings in hinges, or cockroaches back two to four weeks after you sprayed. Any of those means the colony is established and breeding. In a food business, call on the first sighting in a food area.

| What you see | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| One small cockroach at night, once | Possibly a new arrival in a box or bag | Set sticky traps for a week and check recent deliveries and secondhand items |
| Several at night in the same cupboard or appliance | A harbourage close by | Start the food, water and shelter steps and book an inspection |
| Small dark nymphs | Breeding inside | Book a targeted treatment |
| Droppings in hinges and drawer runners | An established colony | Treat the harbourage, not the surfaces |
| Cockroaches out in daylight | A crowded colony | Book a treatment now |
| More babies a few weeks after spraying | Egg cases hatching | Stop spraying and book a targeted treatment with a follow-up |
| Activity in more than one unit or room | Spread through walls or plumbing | Treat the affected areas together |
| Any sighting near food prep or storage in a business | A food safety risk | Log it, protect food and call for a commercial treatment |

## How much does German cockroach treatment cost?

The cost depends on the size and layout of the property, how many rooms and wet areas are affected, how established the colony is, and whether it is a home, rental or food business. German cockroach jobs often need a more detailed inspection and more careful placement than a standard spray, and heavy activity may need a follow-up visit. Pricing is on application, and we quote once we know the site. Our page on [what affects the cost of cockroach treatment](/resources/how-much-is-pest-control-for-cockroaches/) sets out the factors.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Do German cockroaches fly?

German cockroaches have full wings but rarely fly. They run, and at most glide a short distance when they drop from a height. Cockroaches flying around outdoor lights on a hot night are usually one of the big outdoor species.

### Do German cockroaches bite?

They are not known for biting people. The health concern is the bacteria they carry and the allergens in their droppings, saliva and cast skins.

### Can German cockroaches live outside?

Rarely. German cockroaches depend on the warmth, food and water inside houses and businesses, so they live in kitchens and bathrooms, not gardens. Big cockroaches in the yard are a different species.

### How long do German cockroach eggs take to hatch?

About three to four weeks in warm conditions. The female carries the egg case for most of that time and drops it in a sheltered corner shortly before it hatches.

### Does one German cockroach mean an infestation?

Not always. A single adult can arrive in a box or bag. They rarely stay single for long, so set sticky traps for a week and look for droppings and nymphs before you decide.

### Do bug bombs work on German cockroaches?

Not well. A 2019 North Carolina State University study found foggers did not reduce German cockroach numbers, while baits did. The fog lands on open surfaces and misses the cracks where the colony lives.

### What is the most common cockroach in Australian homes?

The German cockroach is one of the most common indoor cockroaches in Australian homes and food businesses, and the one most likely to be breeding in your kitchen. The large ones that come in from the garden are usually American, Australian or smoky brown cockroaches.

### Can you get rid of German cockroaches for good?

A thorough treatment can bring an established colony under control. No honest treatment can promise you will never see another one, because new ones can arrive in boxes, secondhand appliances or from next door. Good kitchen habits and early action on new sightings keep them in check. Our guide to lasting cockroach control explains why.
