You cannot confirm termites from a vague sighting alone. The useful clues are the insect’s body, antennae and wings, where it emerged, and whether the property also has mud-like workings, damaged timber or discarded wings. Keep suspected activity undisturbed and arrange identification if the signs are unclear.

Take a useful identification photo
Place a coin or ruler nearby for scale without crushing the insect. Photograph it from above and the side, then take a wider photo showing where it was found. Record whether it came from soil, timber, a wall gap, a window, a light fitting or outside.
Do not rely on colour alone. Different termite castes can look different, and winged ants are commonly confused with termite alates.
Property signs that raise concern
- mud-like tubes or packed material around cracks;
- hollow, soft or visibly damaged timber;
- piles of similar discarded wings;
- insects emerging from timber or a building gap;
- repeated activity in the same area.
Avoid spraying, breaking open the area or removing timber before advice. Those actions can hide evidence needed for assessment.
