A practical prevention checklist
Check the house from the outside in:
- Repair flyscreens and weather seals that leave usable gaps.
- Check around doors, pipes, vents and cable penetrations.
- Trim vegetation that touches eaves, walls or windows.
- Move firewood, boxes and stored materials away from the building where practical.
- Reduce insects gathering near entry doors and exterior lights.
- Vacuum accessible webs and egg sacs instead of leaving old harbourage in place.
- Keep sheds, garages and rarely moved storage areas orderly enough to inspect.
Then monitor where webs return. Repeated activity in the same location is more useful than a general impression that spiders are “everywhere”.
Do not put hands into dark gaps or stored materials when the species is unknown. Use gloves and tools appropriate to the task, and obtain identification advice if a spider may be of concern.
